📦 Warehouse Wisdom. Weekly.
Logistics news for SMBs. Picked, packed, and delivered without the bias.
INTRODUCTION / OCTOBER 30 2026
Happy Friday!
Autonomous trucks and humanoid robots are moving closer to commercial use. Whether either technology will lower shipping costs soon is another question.
Aurora signed a nonbinding agreement under which Charger Logistics intends to purchase up to 500 Aurora Driver-powered trucks, with deliveries contemplated for 2027 and 2028. Charger would own the vehicles, while Aurora would supply the autonomous driving technology. It is an ambitious plan, but a memorandum of understanding is not a purchase order.
Tesla has also started early production of its Optimus humanoid robot in Fremont, California. The company expects initial customers to use the robots for industrial tasks and is targeting customer shipments in 2027. Commercial performance at scale remains to be demonstrated.
In this week's edition, we'll look at upcoming UPS and USPS shipping charges, the growing rail backlog at the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, and why more shippers are considering rail instead of trucks. We'll also cover changes to Etsy's AI policies, Amazon's latest business purchasing tools, and what holiday shoppers expect when it comes to shipping, returns, and delivery speed. There's plenty to unpack, and not all of it fits neatly into a box.
FREIGHT AND SHIPPING
Carrier rate increases, fuel surcharges, and new options for moving freight

USPS is adding a weekly fuel surcharge. Starting in January 2027, the Postal Service plans to adjust fuel charges weekly for domestic Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and Parcel Select shipments. The surcharge will be calculated as a percentage of base postage using published diesel and jet fuel prices. Negotiated contracts may have different terms.
UPS has two rate increases worth distinguishing. Standard daily rates for ground, air, and international services are set to rise an average of 5.9% on December 21. Separately, UPS plans to increase small-business rates by 4.5% and apply a 5% fuel surcharge. Actual costs will depend on service, package characteristics, surcharges, and contracts.
Diesel prices may stay elevated into spring. Fuel executives at the WEX OTR Summit warned that refinery constraints, limited pipeline capacity, and international disruptions could keep diesel prices high into 2027. The outlook is not a certainty, but it makes fuel surcharges an important line item in transportation budgets.
Roadrunner opens a Canada-to-U.S. LTL lane. The carrier launched outbound Canadian less-than-truckload service reaching more than 40 U.S. metropolitan areas. Roadrunner also announced a 5.9% general rate increase on applicable base rates effective November 2. More service options are welcome, but compare the final invoice as carefully as the transit promise.
Railroads are attracting highway freight. Higher diesel costs and tighter trucking capacity are encouraging some shippers to consider rail. Intermodal shipments increased 12.6% year over year in the week ending October 17, according to The Wall Street Journal. Rail can offer an alternative for longer-distance freight when delivery schedules allow.

GLOBAL LOGISTICS
Continued port congestion, potential labor disruptions, and more cross-border tariff changes

Southern California's rail backlog is growing. On October 26, 35,688 import containers were awaiting on-dock rail service at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Of those, 10,562 had waited at least nine days. These are individual containers, not twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs). Railcar availability is creating particular pressure on shipments headed inland.
Port security workers could strike November 1. Approximately 250 union watchmen at the Los Angeles–Long Beach complex have authorized a walkout if negotiations fail. Other dockworkers could honor their picket lines, potentially affecting a much larger share of terminal operations. Negotiations are continuing, and a shutdown is not inevitable.
U.S. tariffs on certain Canadian goods are changing. Effective October 30, the United States is changing which Canadian products face an additional 50% tariff. Some wood, paper, and machinery products are being removed from the measure, while selected valves, carpets, and waste products are being added. Cross-border importers should check whether their product classifications are affected before finalizing landed costs.
WAREHOUSE QUICK DELIVERIES
Cargo theft, customer service expectations, procurement tools, and more…
A suspicious shoe listing uncovers stolen freight. Los Angeles investigators traced merchandise offered on eBay to approximately $1 million in missing BNSF cargo, recovering 35 pallets. The case illustrates how resale listings can become evidence in cargo-theft investigations.
LTL customers want better updates. In a survey of 1,647 shippers, timely customer service and proactive communication climbed in importance. Damage-free deliveries, complete shipments, reliable pickups, accurate billing, and trustworthiness remain leading concerns.
Amazon Business expands procurement automation. Enhanced Business Assistant tools can help with order tracking, approvals, and spending analysis. A new Value Intelligence offering is designed to show savings and purchasing compliance.
Prime Big Deal Days generates $9.86 billion. Adobe research puts spending during Amazon's October shopping event at $9.86 billion, an 8.5% increase from 2025. The promotional rush may have pulled some holiday purchasing earlier.
3PL BILLING CHECK
Are you verifying every 3PL charge?
We know that 3PL billing gets complicated fast, which is why we always recommend checking invoices at the line-item level. With parcel rates and pricing constantly evolving, discrepancies can be easy to miss and small errors can add up quickly. In total, those discrepancies can represent 3–5% of 3PL spend.
Implentio uses AI to audit and optimize your 3PL invoices against your rate cards, order data, and shipping activity to uncover billing discrepancies, unnecessary surcharges, and other savings opportunities that are easy to miss.

LOGISTICS VITALS
Five numbers that show what holiday shoppers expect from retailers
Holiday spending intentions are rising, and delivery expectations remain high. Kenco's 2026 Peak Season Consumer Report surveyed more than 350 North American consumers in August. The findings offer a useful snapshot of what retailers may face this holiday season.
43% plan to spend more during the holiday season, up from 20% in the prior year's survey.
73% consider free shipping standard when shopping online.
48% expect two-day delivery.
47% expect free returns.
40% expect real-time order tracking.
These percentages describe survey respondents rather than all consumers. They still underline a familiar challenge for smaller retailers: delivery promises must be attractive enough to win orders and realistic enough to fulfill profitably.

Etsy’s latest results and AI policies, plus Walmart’s plans for shopping agents
Etsy's adjusted sales figures improved. Etsy reported third-quarter revenue of $692.5 million and gross merchandise sales of $2.6 billion. Compared with the prior year including Depop, revenue rose 2.1% and GMS fell 2.6%. Excluding Depop from the year-earlier comparison, revenue rose 10.9% and GMS increased 8.8%. Etsy also announced that CFO Lanny Baker plans to leave in March 2027.
Etsy tightens its AI rules. Updated seller guidelines prohibit AI-generated functional guides, including patterns, recipes, and instructions. Etsy also requires at least one unedited photograph of the actual item against a real background. AI-generated art is not banned outright, but disclosure and seller involvement still matter.
Walmart introduces controls for AI shopping agents. Planned Agent Profiles will allow customers to authorize agents, approve purchases, set spending limits, and review what an agent bought. The retailer is also developing an Agent Gateway to connect shopping agents more directly with its services.

UPS shifts towards higher-value shipments as AI changes freight forwarding
UPS grows revenue as package volumes decline. UPS reported a 6.7% year-over-year revenue increase to $22.9 billion in the third quarter, even as U.S. average daily package volume fell 3.3%. SMB shipping volume grew 3.7%, and smaller businesses represented a record 35.1% of U.S. package volume. The results reflect UPS's shift toward higher-value shipments and customers.
C.H. Robinson brings more AI agents to global freight. The logistics provider says its technology has generated more than 80,000 ocean and air freight quotes for over 3,600 customers. Some quotes that previously required a day or longer can now be produced in minutes, according to the company. The system is also being used for booking requests and customs documentation.
