INTRODUCTION / OCTOBER 23 2026
Happy Friday!
The shipping industry is heading into the holiday season with some impressive numbers and a few familiar headaches. The Panama Canal handled 13,951 vessel transits in fiscal 2026, a 4.1% increase, while tonnage climbed 6.5%. El Niño-related water concerns remain a potential complication for shipping schedules.
On the West Coast, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach handled a combined 2.04 million TEUs in September, with both ports setting monthly records. Strong imports are encouraging for retailers, but higher volumes also mean warehouse teams need to watch inventory arrivals, transportation capacity, and fulfillment plans closely. Let's dive in!
FREIGHT AND SHIPPING
Higher rates, carrier bankruptcies, and a $5.8 billion brokerage deal

Knight-Swift is seeking substantial rate increases as the next trucking bid season approaches. Businesses preparing their 2027 transportation budgets should review carrier contracts early and consider how potential pricing changes could affect margins.
A new wave of trucking bankruptcies highlights the financial strain facing carriers dealing with debt and smaller fleets. Shippers relying heavily on a single transportation provider may want to review backup options before disruptions turn into expensive surprises.
U.S. trailer orders surged 385% year-over-year in September, according to FTR, even as the Class 8 truck market showed mixed signals. The contrast suggests carriers are making different bets about future demand, capacity, and equipment needs.
C.H. Robinson plans to acquire RXO in a $5.8 billion deal, marking a major potential shift in freight brokerage. For smaller shippers, consolidation is a reminder to periodically compare service levels, pricing, and the flexibility offered by logistics partners.

GLOBAL LOGISTICS
Port congestion, Savannah expansion, and a cross-border tariff fight

An extended peak shipping season is contributing to high container dwell times at San Pedro Bay ports. Importers should remember that a container reaching port does not necessarily mean inventory will reach the warehouse on schedule.
The Port of Savannah is planning a new container terminal with capacity for 3.5 million TEUs. The project could eventually provide importers with additional options when evaluating East Coast distribution and transportation networks.
A court challenge involving 50% tariffs on Canada adds uncertainty to cross-border trade. Businesses with Canadian suppliers or customers should monitor legal developments and consider how changes could affect landed costs.
WAREHOUSE QUICK DELIVERIES
Freight fraud, holiday shoppers, a Montreal labor deal, and more…
Freight security: Freight fraud is becoming more strategic ahead of peak season, reinforcing the importance of verifying carriers and shipment instructions.
Consumer behavior: 56% of surveyed shoppers identify the lowest price as a leading factor when deciding where to buy online, according to research from Wunderkind and Cordial.
Holiday demand: Deloitte's survey projects average holiday shopper spending will rise 4% to $1,654, with Gen Z and millennials driving the gains.
Canadian ports: Arbitration has ended the Port of Montreal's lengthy contract standoff, resulting in a five-year labor agreement that offers greater stability for shippers.
3PL BILLING CHECK
Are you verifying every 3PL charge?
We know that 3PL billing gets complicated fast, which is why we always recommend checking invoices at the line-item level. With parcel rates and pricing constantly evolving, discrepancies can be easy to miss and small errors can add up quickly. In total, those discrepancies can represent 3–5% of 3PL spend.
Implentio uses AI to audit and optimize your 3PL invoices against your rate cards, order data, and shipping activity to uncover billing discrepancies, unnecessary surcharges, and other savings opportunities that are easy to miss.
Start with a free audit and see what they find.
LOGISTICS VITALS
The $100 Billion price tage on delivery failures
Late and incomplete deliveries are taking a serious financial toll on food and consumer packaged goods manufacturers. A Cleo study estimates the annual economic impact across the U.S. and Canada, including costs that rarely appear on a transportation invoice.
$100 billion: Cleo's modeled estimate of the total annual economic impact of late and incomplete deliveries.
$10 billion to $11 billion: Estimated direct costs, including retailer chargebacks, expedited freight, and dispute management.
$85 billion to $90 billion: Estimated indirect costs, including lost shelf space, smaller retailer orders, excess inventory, and manufacturing inefficiencies.
40%: Estimated share of expedited shipments occurring in the fourth quarter, when holiday demand increases pressure on supply chains.
$11 billion to $23 billion: Potential marketwide recovery from a 5- to 10-percentage-point improvement in on-time, in-full performance, according to Cleo's model.
The figures are estimates from a company that sells supply chain software, but they illustrate how delivery problems can extend far beyond the initial penalty.
ONLINE MARKETPLACES
Retail memberships, AI shopping, and more shipping choices
Walmart is combining Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus memberships in a $120 annual subscription. The offering strengthens Walmart's loyalty strategy and illustrates how major retailers are competing on convenience and recurring customer relationships.
Google has launched Universal Cart, designed to simplify purchasing across retailers. For ecommerce sellers, the development reinforces the importance of accurate product information and shopping experiences that minimize friction.
American Express has introduced a verification framework for AI shopping agents. As automated purchasing develops, merchants will need to pay closer attention to authorization, payment security, and fraud prevention. American Express says it has no live integrations yet.
Walmart has approved eight additional parcel carriers for seller-fulfilled orders. More carrier choices could give marketplace sellers additional flexibility to balance delivery speed, coverage, and shipping costs.

WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
UPS automation, Amazon hiring, and the cost of free returns
UPS has automated four additional facilities ahead of the holiday rush. While smaller warehouses may not have the same resources, improving workflows and reducing unnecessary handling can deliver meaningful efficiency gains at almost any scale.
Amazon plans to hire more than 300,000 workers for the holiday shopping season, up 20% from last year. The positions include full-time, part-time, and seasonal roles. The announcement highlights the scale of peak-season fulfillment activity and the importance of early staffing and training plans for warehouses competing for labor.
Free returns are creating profitability challenges for direct-to-consumer brands. Returns processing, transportation, and inventory recovery can erode margins, making flexible return policies and efficient reverse logistics important parts of holiday planning.
"A missed delivery can cost a manufacturer its next order, its shelf space, and ultimately its standing with a retailer.”
