Logistics news for SMBs. Picked, packed, and delivered without the bias.

INTRODUCTION / OCTOBER 16 2026

Happy Friday!

Walmart is putting its warehouses to work in a whole new way, opening an automation-packed fulfillment center in California designed to help move products faster and more efficiently. Apparently, robots aren't content with just vacuuming our living rooms anymore. And if automated warehouses weren't futuristic enough, Walmart is also expanding its drone delivery service into Denver and Seattle. That's right, your next order could arrive from the sky rather than a delivery truck. Between robots roaming the warehouse floor and drones buzzing overhead, the future of fulfillment is starting to look a lot like a science fiction movie, minus the alien invasion. At least for now.

But there's plenty happening beyond Walmart's high-tech ambitions. This week, we're digging into rising parcel, LTL, and truckload shipping costs, customs changes and tariff litigation, disruptions to global ocean freight, new developments in online marketplaces, and the growing role of AI in warehousing and logistics. Whether you're trying to protect your shipping budget or simply keep up with an industry that refuses to sit still, we've got you covered. Let's dive in!

FREIGHT AND SHIPPING
Parcel, LTL, and truckload rates climb while shippers hunt for relief

If you were hoping for a little breathing room in your shipping budget, the parcel carriers apparently didn't get the memo. Parcel shipping costs are approaching record highs as UPS and FedEx continue piling on surcharges. Between residential delivery fees, additional handling charges, and the seemingly endless assortment of extras, the advertised shipping rate is starting to look more like a suggested opening bid. For smaller e-commerce businesses, it's worth examining the total cost of each shipment rather than focusing solely on base rates.

Businesses shipping pallets aren't getting much relief either. LTL freight rates reached a new high in the third quarter, with further increases expected in Q4. Carriers continue to benefit from pricing strength while shippers look for ways to keep transportation expenses under control. If your business relies on less-than-truckload shipping, reviewing freight classifications, accessorial charges, and carrier agreements could be particularly worthwhile. Apparently, the only thing getting lighter in LTL these days is the shipper's wallet.

Truckload shippers have their own reasons to wince. According to the latest Cass Freight Index report, truckload linehaul rates increased 10.1% year-over-year in September, while freight shipments rose 1.9%. Rising rates and improving demand suggest carriers are gaining some negotiating leverage. Businesses planning their 2027 freight budgets may want to leave a little extra room for surprises.

Food distributor UNFI is taking a more proactive approach, using fuel hedging and AI-powered route optimization to manage higher diesel costs. Smaller businesses may not have the resources of a national distributor, but the principle still applies: fewer unnecessary miles and more efficient delivery routes can help offset expenses that are otherwise difficult to control. Waiting for fuel prices to become predictable, on the other hand, could require a very comfortable chair.

GLOBAL LOGISTICS
Tariff twists, customs headaches, and trouble on the high seas

Just when importers thought they had enough customs paperwork to keep them busy, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is considering earlier filing deadlines and changes to postal import procedures. The proposals aim to strengthen compliance and improve visibility into incoming shipments, but they could also introduce additional costs and complexity for businesses importing lower-value merchandise. For smaller retailers and e-commerce sellers relying on international suppliers, it's another reminder that getting products across the border involves considerably more than printing a shipping label.

The legal battle over tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act has taken another turn. A federal court has cleared the way for a class-action proceeding involving importers seeking reimbursement of certain tariff payments. That doesn't mean refund checks are already in the mail, but the outcome could have significant financial implications for affected businesses. Importers should keep an eye on the proceedings and maintain good records of duties paid. Apparently, customs paperwork may finally have an upside.

Trouble is brewing on the high seas, too. Renewed Houthi attacks in the Middle East have raised concerns about the safety of Red Sea shipping routes, threatening to complicate the recent easing of ocean freight rates. Carriers and shippers face another round of uncertainty as they prepare transportation contracts for 2027. Importers hoping for more predictable transit times and shipping costs may have to keep waiting.

The Panama Canal is creating its own set of routing headaches, encouraging some shippers to move cargo through the Port of Los Angeles instead. Fuel expenses, transit times, and canal-related constraints are influencing which routes make the most economic sense. For businesses importing merchandise into the U.S., these shifts can affect delivery schedules and inland transportation costs. Even the world's most important shipping shortcuts aren't guaranteed to save time.

3PL BILLING CHECK
Are you verifying every 3PL charge?

We know that 3PL billing gets complicated fast, which is why we always recommend checking invoices at the line-item level. With parcel rates and pricing constantly evolving, discrepancies can be easy to miss and small errors can add up quickly. In total, those discrepancies can represent 3–5% of 3PL spend.

Implentio uses AI to audit and optimize your 3PL invoices against your rate cards, order data, and shipping activity to uncover billing discrepancies, unnecessary surcharges, and other savings opportunities that are easy to miss.

Start with a free audit and see what they find.

LOGISTICS VITALS
U.S. container imports make a September splash

Despite tariffs, shipping disruptions, and uncertainty surrounding global trade, U.S. container imports set a new September record. According to Descartes Datamyne, import volumes remained surprisingly strong, although delays at major ports continued to create headaches for businesses waiting on inventory. Here's how the numbers stack up:

  • 2.55 million TEUs: Total U.S. containerized imports in September, the highest volume ever recorded for that month.

  • 10.3%: Increase in container imports compared with September 2025.

  • 24.8%: Increase in September import volume compared with September 2019.

  • 36.3%: China's share of total U.S. container imports during September.

  • 8 of 10: Major U.S. ports that experienced increases in transit delays.

Import demand is holding up remarkably well. Getting all those containers through the supply chain on time is another matter.

ONLINE MARKETPLACES
TikTok returns get easier as Google brings AI to checkout

TikTok Shop is making it easier for customers to send products back, which may not sound like exciting news until you consider how much returns can cost online sellers. UPS' Happy Returns has been integrated into TikTok Shop, allowing participating retailers to offer box-free, label-free returns through approximately 10,000 drop-off locations nationwide. Shoppers can initiate returns through TikTok Shop, while returned merchandise is consolidated and transported back to sellers. A smoother returns experience could help merchants build customer confidence while simplifying reverse logistics. Of course, getting customers to return fewer products would still be the preferred innovation.

Google is making its own changes to the online shopping experience. Newegg has integrated Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, allowing shoppers to discover and purchase products through supported Google Search, AI Mode, and Gemini experiences without navigating through a traditional online storefront. For smaller online merchants, it's another sign that the buying process may increasingly begin and end within AI-powered platforms. Getting products discovered online has always been important, but now businesses may have to start thinking about how to impress the algorithms doing the shopping.

WAREHOUSE TECH
Walmart’s robot reality check meets the AI-powered 3PL

Walmart is discovering that replacing warehouse workers with robots isn't quite as simple as swapping out the batteries in a remote control. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the retailer's push toward warehouse automation has involved substantial investment and operational challenges. Even with enormous financial resources, integrating robotics into complex warehouse operations can be difficult. For smaller companies considering automation, it's worth taking a hard look at the costs, capabilities, and expected return before inviting an army of robots onto the warehouse floor.

A new 3PL industry study suggests artificial intelligence adoption is accelerating across supply chains. Logistics providers are increasingly exploring AI to improve operational visibility, decision-making, and efficiency. For businesses outsourcing fulfillment, the question is whether their 3PL's technology investments are actually improving service and controlling costs. There's a big difference between a warehouse that uses AI to solve problems and one that simply adds the letters 'AI' to its sales presentation.
